Student learning problems in school can be caused by factors that come from students and teachers, these factors greatly influence the learning problems of students, especially in social studies subjects in MTsN 1 Padang City. This study aims to describe the learning problems of participants grade VIII students in social studies learning at MTsN 1 Kota Padang in the odd semester of the 2018/2019 academic year. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with a research location at MTsN 1 in Padang City. Through observation, interview, and documentation study techniques. Data validity is triangulated data to test data accuracy. With data analysis techniques, data collection, data reduction, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study, the causes of learning problems of class VIII students were from internal and external factors. Internal factors that cause students 'learning problems are from the attitude in each learner's lack of formation, lack of motivation in social studies to get the best score, the concentration of students who are still lacking, and students' habits that are not good during learning or go home from school. External factors that influence students are the teacher's factors. Teacher factors are very important to improve good learning outcomes, as long as the delivery is not good, the students become less understood what the teacher is saying, besides the inappropriate method for students in learning, causing students to not understand the material delivered by the teacher to participants students who influence students' learning problems.
