The Betung River is a found in the terraces of Mukomuko City. Betung River is used for various activities such as bathing, washing and toilet (MCK), also used as a waste disposal place for palm oil mills that cannot be processed anymore. Changes in the Betung River environment are expected to result in disruption of the periphyton composition so that the water quality in the river is reduced. The purpose of this study was to determine the periphyton composition in the Betung river. This research was conducted in May 2019 using a descriptive survey method with purposive sampling. Samples were taken at three stations and each station consisted of three repetitions. The composition parameters measured include density, relative density, frequency, relative frequency, diversity index and similarity index. Physical chemistry parameters measured include temperature, pH, DO, free CO2, total N, and TSS. Sample identification was carried out at STKIP Botanical Laboratory of PGRI West Sumatra.. The results obtained are the composition of Periphyton in Betung River found 19 genera (12 families, 4 orders, and 3 classes). The highest density at station II is 472.41 individuals/cm2, while the lowest density at station III is 215.09 individuals/cm2. The genus with the highest density of Navicula was 85.92 and the lowest density of the genus Gyrosigma, Nitzschia, and Desmidium was 0. The highest relative frequency at station I was 7.32% and the lowest relative frequency at station III was 2.06%. the highest diversity index at station II was 2.4585, while the lowest diversity index was at station I which was 2.209. From the calculation of the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index, it can be concluded that the quality of the Betung river water is in the category of moderate pollution levels.
