This research is motivated by the understanding of students mathematical concepts that are still low, students have not been able to develop and construct their own knowledge. The purpose of this study is to describe the understanding of students mathematical concept bye applying a guided discovery model and to find out an increase in understanding of mathematical concepts of grade VIII1 students of Koto Besar Kabupaten Dharmasraya. This type of research is pre-experiment with the pre-test and post-test design. Sampling is done bye purposive sampling, the sample chosen is class VIII1. The instrument used is the pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using Gain and N-Gain. Based on data analysis that understanding students concepts on the indicator restates a concept has experienced a gradual increase. Classifying objects according to certain traits has decreased. Presenting concepts in various forms of mathematical representation is appropriate. Hereafter, applying the concept or algorithm to problem solving is appropriate. So that it can be concluded that there is an increase in understanding of the concepts in each of the VIII1 grade students of Koto Besar Kabupaten Dharmasraya after applying the guided discovery model.
